Athearn SD40 DCC w-Sound HO Scale Locomotive

Athearn SD40 DCC w-Sound delivers detailed HO scale locomotive performance with realistic lighting, precision components, and dependable operation for model railroad layouts. Designed with a highly detailed injection-molded body, this ready-to-run model combines prototype-inspired detailing with a powerful drive system for smooth and reliable performance.

The Athearn SD40 DCC w-Sound features bi-directional LED lighting along with separately applied wire grab irons, fine-scale handrails, photo-etched stainless steel windshield wipers, and a curved radiator fan grab iron. See-through dynamic brake and radiator fans, along with detailed cab windows, add depth to the locomotive's appearance. Additional details include coupler cut levers, rubber MU hoses, an exhaust stack, a frame-mounted bell where applicable, and separately applied air tanks.

The model includes Flexicoil-C trucks with high- or low-mounted brake cylinders according to the prototype, plus a detailed 4,000-gallon fuel tank unless a different capacity is specified for the particular version. McHenry® scale knuckle couplers are Kadee® compatible.

For dependable operation, the Athearn SD40 DCC w-Sound uses all-wheel drive with precision gears for smooth, quiet running and all-wheel electrical pickup for reliable current flow. An improved 5-pole skew-wound can motor with flywheels and a multi-link drivetrain provides trouble-free operation. Quick Plug™ plug-and-play technology supports DCC-ready functionality, while the non-sound version includes a 21-pin NEM DCC plug.

RP25-contour wheels operate on popular brands of track, and the locomotive is painted and printed for realistic decoration. Fully assembled and ready to run, it is packaged in a window box with an interior plastic blister for safe storage. The minimum radius is 18 inches, with 22 inches recommended.
