Athearn HO Scale SD38 Diesel Locomotive

Athearn HO Scale SD38 delivers detailed prototype features and reliable performance for model railroaders looking to add an authentic diesel locomotive to their HO scale layout. This fully assembled and ready-to-run model combines a highly detailed injection-molded body with fine-scale components, realistic decoration, and a dependable drive system.

The Athearn HO Scale SD38 features separately applied wire grab irons, fine-scale handrails, see-through cab windows, fixed-position cab side windows, and printed numberboards. Depending on the prototype, the model can feature oil-bath or paper air filters, ribbed or smooth blower housings, dynamic or non-dynamic brakes, and 2600-, 3200-, or 4000-gallon fuel tanks. Other details include a standard dustbin, non-turbo exhaust stacks, chicken-wire radiator grilles, and a painted “F” on the short hood end where applicable.

The Athearn HO Scale SD38 also features see-through dynamic brake and radiator fans, along with a dynamic brake vent based on the prototype. A standard 81-inch low nose and standard cab with dual-beam sealed headlight and glare shields are included unless otherwise specified for a particular version.

For dependable operation, the locomotive uses all-wheel drive with precision gears for smooth and quiet performance and all-wheel electrical pickup for reliable current collection. A 5-pole skew-wound motor with flywheels and a multi-link drivetrain provides trouble-free operation. DCC-ready 21-pin NEM Quick Plug™ technology makes decoder installation convenient, while bi-directional constant lighting maintains consistent headlight brightness.

McHenry® scale knuckle spring couplers and RP25-contour wheels add reliable functionality. The model is painted and printed for realistic decoration and operates on popular brands of track. With a recommended minimum radius of 22 inches, the Athearn HO Scale SD38 is a detailed and capable addition to an HO scale locomotive fleet.
