The ESU LokSound 5 Micro DCC Direct Kato N Scale Decoder is specially developed for installation in Kato-branded N scale locomotives and track vehicles. In many European and Japanese Kato locomotives, this decoder can be installed directly below the motor in place of the standard analog board, making it possible to retrofit compatible models with advanced digital control. Measuring 27.6mm x 14.1mm x 3mm, this pure DCC decoder is designed for compact N scale applications and is supplied without a loudspeaker.

DCC Operating Modes

The ESU LokSound 5 Micro DCC Direct Kato N Scale Decoder is a dedicated DCC decoder supporting 14 to 128 speed steps, as well as 2- and 4-digit addresses. Up to 32 functions can be controlled, while RailComPlus® allows the decoder to automatically register with compatible digital command stations.

The decoder supports all DCC programming modes and RailCom® allows CV values to be read on the main track when used with compatible control systems. Auxiliary registers are also available for systems that can only program CV values from 1–255.

The decoder detects Märklin® brake distances, ZIMO® HLU/ZACK commands, and the Lenz® ABC system. It also supports braking with DCC brake sections or DC voltage and can stop using a Selectrix® brake diode. An automatic ABC commuter train function allows automatic operation between two stations.

Sound and Audio

Although this model is supplied without a loudspeaker, the ESU LokSound 5 Micro DCC Direct Kato N Scale Decoder supports advanced LokSound audio capabilities when used with a compatible speaker. The sound system can play up to 12 channels simultaneously, with individual channels supporting up to 16-bit resolution. A 128 Mbit sound memory provides substantial capacity for sound projects.

A Class-D audio output can provide up to 3W of output power for compatible speakers with 4–32 ohm impedance. Individual sounds can be adjusted separately for volume, while the flexible sound engine allows detailed simulation of different railroad operating sounds.

Functions and Motor Control

The decoder provides three reinforced function outputs for lighting applications. Each output's brightness can be adjusted independently, allowing modelers to configure lighting functions according to their locomotive and layout requirements.

Motor control features a variable PWM frequency from 10kHz to 50kHz for quiet operation, particularly with bell-anchor motors. Load control can be adjusted using up to 10 CVs, while the Autotune function automatically measures the decoder against the connected motor. The motor output supports up to 0.9A of power.

The ESU LokSound 5 Micro DCC Direct Kato N Scale Decoder can also be used on analog DC layouts and automatically switches between operating modes without requiring extensive manual adjustment. Its outputs include overload protection to help protect the decoder during operation.

With its compact dimensions, Kato-compatible direct installation design, advanced DCC functions, motor control, lighting outputs, and extensive configuration capabilities, this decoder provides a practical digital upgrade option for compatible Kato N scale locomotives.
