United States Disciplinary Barracks

United States Disciplinary Barracks is the United States military's historic maximum-security correctional facility, located at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Established by Congress on May 21, 1874, the institution was originally known as the United States Military Prison and has served as the military's premier correctional center for more than 130 years. The original prison occupied a former quartermaster depot that once supplied military posts, camps, and stations throughout the western frontier and Indian Territory.

Throughout its history, the United States Disciplinary Barracks has earned a reputation as the military's "Center of Correctional Excellence." The facility has housed some of the armed forces' most notorious offenders, including maximum-custody inmates and service members sentenced to death under military law. Beyond confinement, the institution has emphasized discipline, rehabilitation, education, and professional correctional practices designed to prepare eligible inmates for successful reintegration whenever possible.

A significant chapter in the facility's history ended on October 5, 2002, when retreat was played for the final time in front of the iconic eight-story castle that served as the original prison. Shortly afterward, operations moved into a modern correctional complex designed to meet contemporary security, safety, and operational standards while continuing the institution's long-standing mission.
