Missouri State Penitentiary History & Prison Museum

The Missouri State Penitentiary was established in 1833 through a bill passed by the Missouri state legislature, and the first prisoner was incarcerated in 1835. In 1836, inmates constructed the main prison building using rock quarried directly from the site, creating a durable structure that would serve the state for nearly 170 years. Over time, the prison expanded into one of the most recognized correctional facilities in the United States.

The Missouri State Penitentiary was once considered one of the largest maximum-security penal institutions in the country. It gained a reputation for its strict security measures and challenging living conditions. During the early 1960s, more than 550 serious assaults were reported within the prison. These incidents led Time magazine to describe it as the "bloodiest 47 acres in America," even though the prison walls enclosed only about 37 acres. This reputation made the institution one of the most notorious prisons in American history.

Throughout its long history, the Missouri State Penitentiary housed several famous and infamous inmates. World heavyweight boxing champion Sonny Liston learned to box while incarcerated under the guidance of the prison chaplain. Notorious gangster Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd also served time there, and James Earl Ray, who later assassinated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was once an escapee from the prison.

The Missouri State Penitentiary officially closed on September 15, 2004. Following its closure, plans were developed to redevelop the historic property into offices for state agencies and private enterprises while preserving its historical significance. Today, the former prison remains an important landmark that attracts visitors interested in American history, criminal justice, and the legacy of one of the nation's most well-known correctional institutions.
