Since 1868, the Lansing Correctional Facility (formerly the Kansas State Penitentiary) has stood watch over what would become the city of Lansing. Designed by Erasmus Carr, the architect of the Kansas State Capitol, the prison is the oldest correctional institution in Kansas and has played a significant role in the state's history. In the beginning, it housed male and female inmates from Kansas and Oklahoma, as well as prisoners serving federal sentences. Over the years, the facility expanded its operations and adapted to changing correctional policies while maintaining its historic importance.

Today, the Lansing Correctional Facility has a population of approximately 2,400 offenders in minimum, medium, maximum, and special management custody. The institution continues to provide secure housing while offering educational opportunities, vocational training, rehabilitation programs, and other services designed to help prepare inmates for successful reintegration into society after release.

Leavenworth County has also seen the addition of the United States Disciplinary Barracks, United States Penitentiary-Leavenworth, and the former Corrections Corporation of America-Leavenworth, making it the only county in the United States to host a state, military, federal, and private prison. This unique distinction has made the county an important center in the history of American corrections.

Images of America: Lansing Correctional Facility features a remarkable collection of historic photographs documenting the prison's evolution. The book captures the early days when inmates lived under the strict "silent system" and were not permitted to speak to one another, as well as the transition to modern correctional practices where rehabilitation, education, and personal development have become important components of prison life. These photographs preserve the legacy of the Lansing Correctional Facility and provide readers with a fascinating look at one of Kansas' most historic institutions.
