Iowa's Last Narrow-Gauge Railroad

Iowa's Last Narrow-Gauge Railroad tells the fascinating story of the final three-foot-gauge railway to operate in Iowa and the communities that depended on it. With no direct access to navigable rivers except the Mississippi River more than 36 miles away, local leaders feared the community would struggle to survive without a railroad connection.

Backed by the Chicago, Clinton, Dubuque and Minnesota Railroad Company, commonly known as the "River Road," plans gradually took shape. The River Road operated along the western bank of the Mississippi River through Bellevue, providing the opportunity to extend rail service inland. After years of planning and determination, the three-foot-gauge branch line to Cascade was completed in 1879, marking an important milestone in regional transportation.

In 1880, the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway purchased the River Road, including the narrow-gauge branch serving Cascade. Residents welcomed the acquisition, believing it would lead to the conversion of the line from narrow gauge to standard gauge. Although those expectations were never fully realized, the railroad continued to play an important role in supporting local businesses, agriculture, and travel before its abandonment in 1936.

Bellevue and Cascade remain thriving small towns, and many residents still remember the railroad's lasting impact.
